Slowdive were an English shoegaze band that formed in 1989. The band formed in Reading, Berkshire and primarily consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar), and Christian Savill (guitar). Several drummers played with the band, including Ian McCutcheon, Adrian Sell, and most notably Simon Scott who drummed on the first and second albums. Halstead was the band's primary songwriter.
Slowdive formed in Reading, England by Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell in October 1989. The two sang and played guitar, and had been friends since they were six years old. At a Sunday youth group, they began making music in an indie pop band called The Pumpkin Fairies, with bassist Mike Cottle and drummer Adrian Sell. When the Fairies disbanded, Slowdive formed with drummer Adrian Sell, and Nick Chaplin, his friend who played bass. A third guitarist named Christian Savill, previously of the band "Eternal", joined when he became the only person to answer an advert from the band. The ad called for a female guitarist, but Savill wanted to join so badly he offered to wear a dress. He was subsequently recruited. The name "Slowdive" was inspired by a dream Nick Chaplin experienced.

Алекс: Как вы подписали контракт с Creation?
Ник: Мы послали кассету в их офис, надеясь что это сработает, но они получали так много записей, что вероятней всего никогда не слышали её. К счастью наш общий друг с Аланом Макги был на репетиции одной странной группы (она называлась 5:30), а мы были рядом, т.к. играли следующими. Так вот, этот общий друг послушал нас, и подошёл к нам вскоре после (того как мы дали ему кассету), и сказал - думаю Алан будет рад увидеть вас на Creation - остальное уже история.
С басистом Ником Чаплином и гитаристом Кристианом Савилл, группа записала несколько EP, наполненных искаженными гитарами и красивыми меланхоличными вокалами, чем снискала для себя сравнение с творчеством групп My Bloody Valentine и Ride. Первый EP, Slowdive, был выпущен в ноябре 1990.
Получив самые высокие оценки критиков, группа продолжала набирать обороты среди поклонников, особенно на юге Англии, где пользовалась особой популярностью музыка Valentines. Музыкальная пресса не оставляла их без внимания, объединяя вместе творчество Slowdive, Ride, Pale Saints и Chapterhouse.

Как и первый EP, Morningrise не сумел втиснуться в списки чартов и хит-парадов, так как широкая аудитория отвергала их творчество. Но ситуация изменилась после выхода следующего EP в июне 1991 под названием Holding Our Breath, который в чартах значился под номером 51.
Дальнейшее продвижение в популярности великолепной Catch the Breeze, под всеобщее восхищение критиков, позволило Slowdive подняться вверх в строчках хит-парада. In Mind был заново выпущен с ремиксами Bandulu и Reload, - группами из танцевального ответвления Creation - Infonet. Результат был на удивление хорош, хотя музыкальная пресса была озадачена, назвав получившийся звук shoe techno.
В 1995 увидел свет их третий альбом, Pygmalion, который заимствовал технику семплирования гитар из альбома Loveless, с дополнением более тяжелой басовой линии. Они постоянно говорят о том, как много употребляют наркотиков, и какие гитарные усилители используют - это всё очень скучно. Но, есть группы с которыми мы дружим и гастролируем. Нам всем очень нравятся Cranes, они наши друзья (по секрету) и тот факт, что они заодно друзья всех этих тусовщиков является вторичным, да они и не на Creation так или иначе.
Рэйчел: Cranes являются единственной группой, с которыми мы поддерживаем контакты даже когда мы отдыхаем, в жизни.
Алекс: Разве вы не гастролировали с Ride по Америке?
Ник: Они были действительно хорошие парни, но мы имеем не так уж много общего с ними. Мы бы выпили пиво, но на самом деле не хотим тусоваться, я не заметил что они повзрослели.
Алекс: Как вы, ребята, чувствовали себя, в самом начале карьеры, когда вас практически везде сравнивали с My Bloody Valentine?
Ник: Сложный вопрос, в принципе мы не возражаем, когда нас сравнивают с MBV, потому что в начале они очевидно оказали на нас большое влияние, с другой строны - это немного расстраивает, ведь мы действительно имеем мало общего.
Подписавшись с лейблом 4AD, Mojave 3 выпустили свой первый альбом Ask Me Tomorrow в октябре 1995. Музыкальные предпочтения в группе теперь тяготели к кантри-року, а голос Нейла, был сравним с Nick Drake или Bob Dylan. Последующие альбомы Out Of Tune (1998) и Excuses For Travellers (2000) шли по тому же пути. В 2001/2002 гг. Нейл был загружен работой в сольном туре по США. Далее последовали: в 2003 Bluebird Of Happiness EP, альбом того же года - Spoon and Rafter, через три года появились EP 2006 Breaking The Ice, и наконец их последний альбом вышел в 2006 году под названием Puzzles Like You, все работы достаточно тепло встречались критиками, однако публика отчаянно желала получить от них новый Souvlaki... что очевидно невозможно.

After over a decade of dismissing the possibility of a Slowdive reunion, former frontman Neil Halstead is no longer ruling it out. “There’s a chance that we’ll get back together,” Halstead told Hive over the phone yesterday from China, where his other outfit Mojave 3 is touring. “It’s definitely possible at some point.” Halstead added that the band never swore off a reformation. “No one has ever really said, ‘I never want to do it.’ We’ve never really talked about it much.”
Though Slowdive haven’t performed or recorded together in its complete lineup since penning their final album, 1995’s Pygmalion, Halstead maintains that they’ve all kept in touch and remain on good terms. “We haven’t been in the same room together for a really long time,” he said, “We’re all in contact through email. We sort of have these email conversations and we’re all friendly, but we haven’t actually been together as the whole Slowdive unit in years, unfortunately.”
What will it take for the UK shoegaze pioneers, then, to finally reunite? “Just shitloads of money, you know” Halstead said, laughing. “It’s crazy how in vogue it is for bands to get back together these days. It’s almost like you’re not allowed not to get back together. So, I’m sure that we will get back together — because we won’t be allowed not to.”
Until that happens, we’ll at least be seeing new music from Halstead. His third solo album Palindrome Hunches is due out on September 11 via Brushfire Records. Tune into Hive starting Tuesday, September 4 for an exclusive preview of the new album and a longer Q&A.

К тому же, в начале 90-х имел место гитарный бум, и вышла вереница превосходных дебютов таких групп как Pale Saints, Ride, Bleach и Nirvana. Slowdive была первой группой представленной Creation в IRC 2-го февраля 1995 года. В одном из своих информационных бюллетеней, Slowdive написали, что планируют сделать кавер "Fourth of July" из "Galaxie 500" для трибютного альбома, который собирались выпустить Elefant Records в Испании (в итоге испанский трибьют вышел на So Soft Records). Рейчел: Нет, это шутка Кристиана, но я походила на нее однажды. Мы встретились с Кристианом через Ника, нашего первого барабанщика. Вершина их творчества, альбом довольно контрастный, запоминающийся, и давно уже признан лучшим в дискографии группы и, наверное, на поле психоделического дримпопа вообще. Название происходит от весьма непонятной фразы, появляющейся на пленке Frank'а Rizzo и Jerky Boys, которую группа слушала во время записи. В одном из их телефонных приколов всплывает предложение: «Моя жена любит это греческое дерьмо. Она отсосёт тебе как souvlaki». Кто такая эта Souvlaki - непонятно... Вообще это название греческой шавермы. Содержимое диска вовсе не такое грязное. Получив после дебютной работы прозрачный намек на то, что их звук мог бы быть получше, группа заметно постаралась. Было написано шестьдесят минут того что потом станут называть дримпоп, поток красивых слегка нойзовых мелодий, завернутых в оригинальное гитарное звучание, с многослойными вокалами и акустически размазанные ударные пассажи, что позволило отнести альбом в число лучших, описывающих, что же такое есть этот dream pop. И если композиции наподобие Alison, 40 Days врываются в слушательское сознание своей простотой и хитовостью, то вещи Souvlaki Space Station, When the Sun Hits, Good Day Sunshine, Missing You уже смахивают на серьезные, даже временами экспериментальные вещи. Это и неудивительно - в записи альбома принял участие сам Брайн Ино, в частности, его появлением ознаменованы треки Sing, Here She Comes. Кроме того, альбом содержит отличную кавер-версию песни Some Velvet Morning, которую в оригинале исполяет Nancy Sinatra.
Алекс: В ваших песнях много имён, например кто такая Селия из Celia's Dream?
Рэйчел: Селия была взята из австралийского фильма Celia's Rabbit, мы с Нилом смотрели его.

Long-term school-friends Neil Halstead & Rachel Goswell formed Slowdive in October 1989, the name, Slowdive, coming from a dream Niel Halstead once had. According to an interview in Alternative Press, he dreamt of two words, Slowdive and Slowburn. At first they were a highly derivative My Bloody Valentine/Sonic Youth clone, but even their first demo reveals a better understanding of controlled noise than most of their contemporaries. In their defence the 'demo' was really just them recording for fun, and it wasn't until early in 1990 that the band became Slowdive proper with their own ideas.
The major change was the addition of third guitarist, Christian Savill, previously of local act Eternal. "We advertised for a female guitarist, but only Christian replied. He writes a sweet letter though, he said he'd wear a dress if neccesary". The songs on the second demo show a leap forward, while previously they headed towards a climax of noise, 'Avalyn' was a gentle steady flow of nearly white noise. It's this demo, passed on by another Reading act, Swervedriver, that brought Slowdive onto Creation records and became the first single, as attempts to recreate the atmosphere in a more expensive studio failed.
Problamaticaly between recording the demo and signing to Creation their drummer left for University, and they were forced to draft in a replacement. He didn't share the same aims and tastes as the group, and they didn't really get on with him, making time on the road a little uncomfortable. More importantly "He had a shaggy perm, he looked like Jon Bon Jovi" so he was replaced by the bowl-cutted Simon Scott, of the sadly deceased Charlottes.
Simon later left Slowdive on good terms in February-March 1994 to continue his career in jazzy circles and was replaced by "the immensely handsome and talented" Ian MacCutcheon before they went on their 1994 north american tour, which they paid for themselves since SBK Records, their U.S. distributor, who had promised them an extensive tour, went out of business.
My Bloody Valentine have been directly relevant to their use of guitar sound. The Cocteau Twins and The Byrds were big influences too. They worry about the build them up/knock them down syndrome, complaining that the British press expect revelations with the first record, while bands like the Cocteau's & MBV have taken years to achieve the respect they have.
The problem has probably been caused by the string of excellent debuts by Pale Saints, Ride, Bleach and Slowdive themselves creating an expectation that the best music will come from previously unknown bands. Slowdive have been perhaps particularly lucky with Melody Maker giving them single of the week for all their releases during 1991, and a reviewer at NME giving them the same accolade as he felt the review printed the previous week was unfair.
Slowdive was the first band featured by Creation on IRC on february 2nd 1995. In one of Slowdive's newsletters, they wrote about a planned cover of Galaxie 500's "Fourth of July" for a tribute album, that was going to be released by Elefant Records in Spain. To my knowledge, the album was unfortunately never released, and probably never will be, at least not including Slowdive, beacuse the band was dropped by Creation shortly after the release of Pygmalion, April 1995.
This affected the release of Pygmalion in the U.S. and the band started to look for a new label. Rumors said that Rachel and Neil sent a demo to 4AD, which got a positive reaction from the label. And that happened to be the truth. Rachel, Ian and Neil formed the band Mojave 3 and were signed to 4AD in the summer of 1995 (for that story, please check the Mojave 3 Discography). Rachel Goswell said: "After that ("Pygmalion"), Slowdive didn't so much split as take a shift in direction, one that a couple of the other members weren't comfortable with. It didn't seem right to carry on with the same name, we needed to get a fresh start and all the pieces fell into place for us to get one.".

A Brief History of Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead Before Slowdive and Mojave 3

This is my attempt at writing a brief timeline of what came before Slowdive and Mojave 3. Rachel Goswell and Neil Halstead are two musicians/singers/songwriters whom I respect and admire immensely, and information about them prior to Slowdive is basically nonexistent on the web. I thought it was about time someone did something about that, and this is what I have tried to do here. It isn't much, but it is more than was available on the web before. I still don't know much about Neil's life prior to Slowdive, so most of it is little tidbits about Rachel I have gathered. I hope this will serve as a useful and interesting resource for Slowdive and Mojave 3 fans everywhere, and that they will be able to see the events that led to Rachel and Neil's great contributions to music. This page is dedicated to this brilliant musical duo whom we all (should) know and love.
1970
Neil Halstead is born on 7 October in Wokingham, England (near Reading).
1971
Rachel Goswell is born on 16 May in a small village outside Reading, England.
1976/77
Neil's family moves to Sonning Common in Oxfordshire, and that is where he first meets Rachel (at school when they were about six years old).
1978
Rachel begins to learn guitar from her father at the age of 7.
Sometime in the early-mid 1980s
Rachel and Neil begin to take classical guitar lessons from Rachel's best friend's mother. They continue to pass eachother often, as they attended the same schools. Their friendship develops further.
Sometime in the early-mid 1980s
Neil does a paper round, saves up some money, and buys his first electric guitar.
1984
Rachel gets obsessed with Grace Jones.
1985
Rachel gets obsessed with The Smiths.
Sometime in the mid-1980s
Rachel discovers the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees from her older brother.
1988
Rachel and Neil get together and form the band the Pumpkin Fairies, along with future Slowdive bandmates Nick Chaplin on bass and Adrian Sell on drums (the latter was not in Slowdive very long).
1989
The Pumpkin Fairies record and release their 7 song cassette demo. It was recorded on 2 Jan 1989 at Reading Berks Rehearsal studios, when Neil was 18 and Rachel just 17. The tracklisting is as follows:

Approximately a few dozen cassettes were made, complete with B&W photocopied j-cards. The cover image is a picture of Rachel looking up, complete with poofed out goth hairdo, looking sorta like a cross between Robert Smith and Siouxsie (UPDATE 17 June 2005: I have added a scan of the cassette jcard here). They were sold at the few gigs they played in Reading, and given to friends. It is uncertain how many copies have survived to this day. On these songs Rachel was the only vocalist, although Neil does sing backup on "stephanie says". This song (albeit a VU cover) was the first example of how perfect Rachel and Neil's voices harmonised. On the whole the songs sound highly derivative of My Bloody Valentine, sort of gothy in the English sense. But throughout there are definite signs of what Neil and Rachel would later write, definite hints. Rachel's vocals are up front and prominent, and sound surprisingly good for her young age.
Neil's guitar work consists of mainly basic chords played through fuzzy effects (primarily distortion). The song "whats the matter with me" is probably the highlight of this demo, a wonderful whimsical little acoustic ditty with Rachel singing and Neil plucking away on the guitar. It sounds very quirky in a charming Syd Barrett sort of fashion. A really brilliant song that wouldn't sound all that out of place on a Mojave 3 record. The bonus track at the end is of unknown origin as it isn't listed in the credits. It is a recording presumably from 1988 in Rachel's parent's garage, where they practised. It sounds as if it was recorded on a boombox or a cheap portable cassette recorder. There's some talking at the end, and it's rather interesting to hear Rachel's high-pitched, youthful voice. Rather surprisingly, Neil's voice doesn't sound too different from what it is now.
So a few months later the Pumpkin Fairies were no more, and Slowdive emerged in October of 1989. Destined to fade away into the annals of musical history totally unknown and forgotten, the Pumpkin Fairies are nevertheless important as they were the very beginnings of the musical partnership of Rachel and Neil, giving the world (or at least a few dozen people in Reading) a glimpse of the greatness to come.
1989 (Autumn)
Neil has a place at University to read English Lit, but doesn't take it up because Slowdive are signed to Creation at the time... and it is here where the story ends and continues on into Slowdive, and further on to Mojave 3, and somewhere near on the horizon, into Rachel and Neil's individual solo careers...
I was recently contacted by Neil's mum Pamela. She graciously gave me some more tidbits about Neil's early years, which I've tried to fit into the above timeline, but the exact dates are unknown so it's sort of a general estimation. I've decided to just post her words below, directly as she sent them to me, in order to reference what information I got from her, as well as to have perhaps a more cohesive summation of what might appear a bit vague on the timeline above:

One of the few musical incarnations of absolute beauty ever to exist in the world, the band Slowdive was formed in Reading, England, in 1989, by
singer/guitarist Neil Halstead (b. October 7, 1970), singer/guitarist Rachel Goswell (b. May 16, 1971), bassist Nick Chaplin (b. December 23, 1970), guitarist Christian Savill (b. December 6, 1970), and drummer Adrian Sell.
No other band has ever sounded like Slowdive did, though many have tried. (Secret Shine, anyone?) Their wavey, hypnagogic, dreamy combination of guitars, guitar effects, soft drum beats and shadowy female and male vocals set them apart from their contemporaries in the mostly (but not equally) beautiful shoegazer movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. They were softer and less blas than the genre's forerunners, My Bloody Valentine, shinier than shoegazer contemporaries Lush, yet they were swifter and more textured than Moose, the
minimalists of the genre.
The band was named for a word Chaplin had heard in a dream, though he couldn't remember exactly which word when he woke up. He was certain that it was either "slowdive" or "slowburn." Obviously the band chose "slowdive" and then began expanding on their dreamy origins by creating music to fall in love to, to lay comatose to, and to forgive someone to. Contrary to the opinion of some, the band did not take their name from the Siouxsie & The Banshees song "Slowdive."Slowdive's first cache of EP releases, released on then-luminary label Creation Records, appeared in 1990 and 1991. First came Slowdive, a three-track 12", then the CD EP Morningrise and the 12" Holding Our Breath. All three were named Melody Maker Single of the Week upon their release. Renowned BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel was highly enthusiastic about promoting the band and due to his influence they became more popular, and were loved by British music journalists. In 1991 Creation (UK/Europe) and SBK Records (USA) released the band's debut album, Just For A Day, to the wide acclaim of the music press.
The early 1990s were a busy time for the band. Most of the time they were either on tour or in the studio. However, due to the shoegaze genre's inability to catch on in the USA, several tours there were planned and scrapped because SBK Records seemed to be against the band from the start. Their records received virtually no promotion in the States and sold poorly as a result, though the band did garner somewhat of a cult following there around this time.
By 1993, shoegaze was rapidly sinking as a favoured genre of music, for reasons I was never able to figure out. Though there seems to be a strong calling for it as of late. Anway By 1993 the band had released a couple more EPs; Outside Your Room and the 5 EP, both on Creation (none of the EPs ever saw release on the other side of the pond), and their second full-length album, Souvlaki.
In an odd move, SBK packaged Souvlaki and four of the five tracks from the 5 EP onto on CD and released it in the USA. In late 1993 the band was finally able to tour the States, and did so on a few occasions, with the bands Ride, and later Lush and Catherine Wheel.
Both tours were a failure due to poor promotion on SBK's part, once again. In mid-1994 Slowdive financed a USA tour of their own, determined to not screw over their American and Canadian fans. It lasted only two weeks, but most of the dates sold out.
Early on, Adrian Sell left the band to persue academic endeavours, and he was replaced by Neil Carter for the recording of Morningrise, and then for a few years by Simon Scott, formerly of the band Eternal. After a short break after the tours, the band entered the studio again to record what ended up their final album, the ambient-ish Pygmalion. Simon Scott left the band prior to its recording, and he was replaced by drummer Ian McCutcheon.
Pygmalion contained just about zero contribution from anyone other than Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell. The rest of the band, not liking the ambient/experimental tack that Neil and Rachel were leaning towards, quit. After the album's release in 1995 (in the UK only -- SBK Records had gone bankrupt the previous year), Slowdive announced that they had not so much had broken up but had more reformed themselves with a new name -- Mojave 3.
The new band, consisting of Neil, Rachel, Ian and pianist Poppy Gonzalez, had originally named themselves just "Mojave," but after quickly discovering another band had that name, they pinned the "3" onto the end of it, as they had been a trio at the time. Poppy Gonzalez didn't come along until the band were recording their first album as Mojave 3, entitled Ask Me Tomorrow, which was released in 1996, effectively tolling the bell for Slowdive. Mojave 3 ended up branching out into various genres in the intervening years, including country music, surf rock, and atmospheric jazz. Neil Halstead has also built a solo career, releasing the twangy country music album Sleeping On Roads in 2002.
Despite the stigma that the genre-whoring public and music press insist on inflicting on everyone, Slowdive transcended whatever they were labeled with, and meshed their way onto a lot of music-elitists' favourite band lists. I recommend starting at the beginning, if you mean to pick up some of their recordings. The albums are still relatively easy to find, however the EPs are not. Good luck.
